Yunmelngen is the leader and symbol of the Heavenly Empire.

Appearance[]

Yunmelngen has the appearance of a young boy with feminine appearance and animal-like features, most notably his ears and tail.

Personality[]

Like Salinger, Yunmelngen is driven by what he considers interesting. Even though he knew about the corruption within the Eight Great Apostles, he overlooked it because it wasn't "worth his time", instead focusing on a witch princess that has fallen in love with an Imperial swordsman.[1] In fact, his close aides measure his mood with a boredom scale, and last time it reached 90, Yunmelngen escaped to meet with Salinger in Alcatroz.[2]

History[]

The position of emperor had already existed long before Nebulis' revolution, and candidates were chosen through the Ascension Ceremony, a ritual that was kept hidden from the Imperial subjects.[2]

A century ago, the ruling emperor was Yunmelngen's father, and Yunmelngen himself was the crown prince. Despite his status, he would often sneak out of the palace in order to experience new things. Although he didn't trust the Eight Elders, he was excited when they announced the discovery of a new energy. Yunmelngen would later meet one of the laborers digging for the energy, Crosswell, after stealing his bonus pay because he wanted to experience what it feels like to steal from someone. Although their first meeting wasn't great, they soon became close friends.

However, like many people of the time, he was exposed to Astral Energy and became an astral mage. Having reached the unification between human and astral spirit like Nebulis, Yunmelngen developed beast-like features and stopped aging, keeping the position of emperor to this day. Knowing that the people wouldn't accept an inhuman emperor, Yunmelngen began employing body doubles every generation. The current body double is the ninth one, giving the impression that there were nine emperors after Yunmelngen.[2]

Synopsis[]

Volume 3[]

After Salinger escaped from Orelgan, Yunmelngen suddenly appeared on the outskirts of Alcatroz to greet him.

Volume 9[]

After being informed that Iska had returned to the Empire, Yunmelngen asks Risya to bring him here so he can tell him about the Astral Swords. However, Yunmelngen changes his mind and personally accompanies Risya to fetch Iska upon learning that he was in Altoria, where the clandestine facility Elza's Sarcophagus was located.

The duo teleports there and finds Unit 907 with Rin Vispose after they freed Sisbell from the facility together. Risya attempts to capture Sisbell, but Rin gets in the way and gets bound instead. Nevertheless, Yunmelgen is satisfied with the prisoner due to Rin's feisty attitude. He then leaves with Risya and Rin after inviting Iska and Sisbell to the Imperial capital.

Volume 10[]

In the Emperor's tower, Rin gets angry since Yunmelgen keeps calling her a witch, but he defends himself by saying that she wouldn't give him her name. He then proposes a competition: if she wins, he will release her; otherwise, she will tell him her name. Rin draws her knives thinking she will be fighting him, but she drops them upon finding out they're going to play shogi. She loses seventeen times in a row, but still wants to keep going.

Volume 11[]

With Sisbell's powers, Yunmelngen is able to learn the truth of what happened a hundred years ago, and so does everyone present.

Volume 12[]

Yunmelngen teleports everyone to where Subject E is with the hope of defeating her, but they are not able to even with Nebulis and Crosswell's help. After Subject E retreated to the planet's core, Yunmelngen offers Alice and Sisbell the option to stay at the Empire, becoming more than prisoners but less than guests, so that they can work together to defeat the monstrous witch.

Volume 13[]

While he is asleep, Sisbell plays with his tail. After waking up, he informs everyone of the Catalysc Disaster Zone, where the Great Star Calamity first arrived and began corrupting the Astral Spirits. When the spirits fled the planet's core, they caused Vortexes to appear across the world. If they don't do anything, the Calamity will mutate everything and everyone. Yunmelngen also notices something about Mismis' Astral spirit, which has something to do with Alicerose, but doesn't elaborate.

Abilities[]

Longevity: Yunmelngen has lived since the birth of the astral mages a century ago, and still maintains a youthful appearance in the present.

World Perception: Yunmelngen seems to be aware of everything that's happening in the world, even about the relation between Iska and Alice. This is further hinted by Risya, who has said that: “The Lord sees everything. You don’t have to tell him. He’s already heard it all.”[3]

Teleportation: Yunmelngen can teleport himself and/or other people. Because of this, he can leave the Empire and appear in the Sovereignty undetected.

Relationships[]

Hakenweitz was Yunmenlgen's father who was his predecessor and the previous Emperor.

One of his eleven Saint Disciples, and his most trusted one as she is considered the Emperor's Right Hand. When Luclezeus was sent out to kill both the 907th Unit and Sisbell in attempt to prevent them revealing the truth after the death of Kelvina Sofita Elmos, Yunmelngen assigned Risya to aid the Unit and Sisbell from the Apostle when the Emperor needs the princess alive and unharmed for the truth behind this 100 years war.

Yunmelngen knew Crosswell since before the discovery of astral energy, and the two were close. They are still in contact, even though the Imperial swordsman disappeared from the Empire without a trace.

Yunmelngen needs Sisbell's powers in order to reveal the truth of what happened a hundred years ago, and the reason why he ended up like this. When Luclezeus was sent out to kill both Sisbell and the 907th Unit in attempt to prevent them from revealing the truth, Yunmelngen sent Risya to protect the Nebulis princess and aid the Unit as he need Sisbell alive and unharmed. Risya even offered Sisbell a seat within the Saint Disciples, likely with Yunmelngen's approval. He would later offer her a truce/alliance in order to defeat Subject E together, which she agrees to. In Volume 13, Sisbell touched and played with Yunmelngen's tail while the Emperor is sleeping.

Although he initially took Rin in order to persuade Sisbell into coming to the capital, Yunmelngen took an interest in Rin and invited her to play board games. If she beat him at least once, he will let her go. But if she gives up, she will have to give him her name.

Trivia[]

  • The Imperial capital, Yunmelngen, is named after him.
  • Yunmelngen's scenes in the Anime are original to the anime, as he didn't appear in the light novel until later. In addition, he appeared in front of Nameless without using a body double, which creates a plot hole since the latter loathes astral mages.
  • In the English light novels, Yunmelngen is referred to as "Lord Yunmelngen." However, in the Japanese light novels, the kanji for his title are 天帝, which mean "Emperor of Heaven" or "Heavenly Emperor." In Chinese mythology, the Emperor of Heaven is the supreme ruler of the heavens and all realms.
