"This world is full of scars, and it doesn’t have anything resembling heroes or a savior. For that reason, I’ve become a witch — to drive the Empire to extinction."
— Nebulis, Volume 1 Chapter 6
Nebulis, also known as the "Grand Witch" by the Empire, is the strongest Astral Mage to be ever be born. After causing a calamity in the Heavenly Empire one hundred years ago, she founded the Nebulis Sovereignty and went into a deep slumber.
Her full name is Eve Sophi Nebulis.
Appearance[]
Nebulis has the appearance of a young girl, no older than twelve or thirteen, with a characteristic tanned copper skin. Her hair is long and pearlescent in color.[1] She wears a frilly outfit.
Personality[]
Nebulis has a great hatred toward the empire and wishes to destroy it completely, having no problem killing astral mages if they got in her way, including her sister's descendants (such as Alice and Sisbell). She is also somewhat arrogant, dismissing Iska and Alice's ability to stop her.
She doesn't believe in heroes or saviors, seeing them as unrealistic, and prefers to be considered a "witch" who simply destroys the enemy.
When she was a regular human, she used to be bright and carefree.
History[]
When they were teens, Eve and her twin sister Alicerose went to the Empire for work so they could send money home. They worked at the site where the astral energy would be discovered, carrying water bottles and lunches for the laborers. After a year, the two were joined by their distant relative, Crosswell. When the energy was close to being released, a ceremony was held with the leaders of the Empire. The energy quickly surfaced and Eve felt drawn to it, as a voice was calling out to her. A huge blast then knocked everyone unconscious, but unlike the others, Eve woke up on the same day of the incident and was discharged from the hospital.
More people began to wake up over the following days, finding a mark somewhere in their bodies. One night, Eve returned to the excavation site in a trance. Crosswell tried to wake her up, but it wasn't Eve who talked. The entity asked who she was and questioned whether she was a human or an astral spirit. Her mark then began to glow as Eve started releasing rays of light powerful enough to evaporate metal. Fortunately, no one was hurt because it was directed to the sky, and Eve collapsed afterward. Crosswell questioned her the next morning, but she didn't remember. When they turned on the TV, they saw a revelation that would shake the entire world— their coworker Musha was creating fire from her bare hands.
While the world was fascinated with them at first, reports of powered people committing crimes began to appear. In reality, it was only a small number, but the Eight Great Elders ramped up those numbers to create the narrative that the "witches" were dangerous. Musha was eventually arrested as well, being accused of committing arson and then burning the officers who came for her. However, Eve didn't believe this and went to the Imperial assembly to talk with her, as she could feel Musha's astral power underneath. The guards alerted the Eight Great Elders and tried to arrest her, but she released a shockwave that knocked them out and teleported inside. Thirty minutes later, the Imperial assembly was partially destroyed by an explosion from underground. This incident showed the world how dangerous the "witches" could truly be and earned her the name of "Grand Witch Nebulis".
Eve returned home a few days later and brought Alice and Crosswell inside her pocket dimension, where she sheltered all the "witches" she rescued from the military police. She planned to leave the Empire with them, but Alice pleaded with her for some time to think, as their lives were in the Empire. Half a year later, they would finally begin to leave. However, their plan was exposed by Drake In Empire, who was captured and coerced by the Eight Great Elders into testing that the witches wanted to rebel. An unknown armed group then attacked the palace and set the capital ablaze, making it seem as though the witches had started a rebellion.
Eve and the more powerful "witches" fought back, allowing their weaker brethren to escape. However, the Imperial army blocked their path, and Alice was shot while attempting to calm down both sides. This caused an angry Eve to summon her divine staff and blow away the surroundings and the reinforcements. She attempted to kill the retreating soldiers as well, only to be stopped by Prince Yunmelngen. The prince tried reasoning with her and showed her his wounds, stating that someone deceived them into fighting each other. He then reminded her that their true enemy is not the Empire but the Calamity at the planet's core. Eve refused to listen, and a fight between the two was inevitable. However, Crosswell stepped in and shocked everyone by announcing that he was staying to help Yunmelngen change the Empire from within. Suddenly, the calamity's voice was heard, causing them to collapse. Because of this, Eve reluctantly leaves with Alice, parting ways with Crosswell bittersweetly.
For the next ten years, the "witches" learned to control their powers and dubbed themselves Astral Mages. They were led by the Grand Witch Nebulis and Alicerose, who ran the country as its first queen, later becoming known as Nebulis I. Although the country was small, the Nebulis Sovereignty would keep growing because more and more astral mages were born worldwide. Alice eventually succumbed to her wounds and passed away, sending a grieving Eve back to the Empire for revenge. However, Crosswell stood in her way and showed her the power of his Astral Swords, which could interfere with her powers. The outcome of the fight is unknown, but Eve eventually returned to the Sovereignty.
Because her astral power was even capable of changing the flow of time, Nebulis fell into suspended animation instead of aging, waiting for the time to take her revenge on the Empire again. The truth behind her survival was then kept hidden from the public, with the only ones who knew about it being the royal family and a select few.[1]
Synopsis[]
Volume 1[]
When Alice fought Iska for the fist time, Nebulis' astral powers reacted to the swordsman's Astral Swords, releasing some of her restraints.
After a couple of days, her bindings became fully undone, marking Nebulis' return after a century of slumber. However, she wasn't completely awake yet, and was driven by the astral power's automatic defense mechanism in response to the astral swords. She appeared before Alice, Iska, Rin, and Mismis when they were on the neutral city and attacked them.
Despite being a descendant of her twin sister, Nebulis still attacked Alice for siding with Iska, an Imperial soldier. Because of her indiscriminate assault, Rin was rendered unconscious protecting the four of them, turning Alice against her.
As soon as the two figured out that her weakness was her wings, Nebulis woke up completely, disappointed that her powers woke her up early due to measly opponents. Following an intense battle against Iska and Alice's coordinated attacks, Iska chops off Nebulis' wings with his swords, sending her back into a deep slumber.
Volume 10[]
Awakening from her deep slumber once again, she was held off from going out by Alice. But despite the girl's best efforts, Nebulis beat her and headed straight towards the Empire.
Volume 11[]
While nearing the Empire, Crosswell intercepts her at the border and prepares to fight against her.
Volume 12[]
Crosswell talks to Nebulis, and he reflects about how he should've passed his knowledge and mission to their younger generations instead of keeping everything to himself. He said he was going to change the Empire, but this was just a pipe dream and the war only got worse. Crosswell has been dreaming for a century, and she'll bring him back to reality.
After fighting for a while, the Emperor Yunmelngen suddenly teleports both of them to Elletear Lou Nebulis IX and they don't waste any time to attack her, as they know what kind of calamity lies inside of her. Elletear then recites a song from the "Great Star Disaster" and incapacitates the three former friends, whose bodies are badly reacting to the Star Disaster. Eventually, Elletear retreats and leaves two cyclops for everyone to fight. Nebulis drops the "Staff of Heaven" one of them to finish it off, and teleports off since she hates the Empire, but won't ignore what Elletear has become.
Abilities[]
- Longevity: Like both Crosswell Nes Lubigate and Emperor Yunmelngen, Nebulis has lived for more than 100 years and still maintains her youth appearance even today.
- Space-Time Astral Power: Nebulis' astral power and the oldest astral spirit born from the earth's core. The spirit can access the planet's memories to bring forth phenomena of all kinds from across space-time. In addition, with her power over space, she is able to manipulate the atmosphere to either condense it into a protective shield, or warp it into invisible blades.
- Fire Astral Power: By contacting the "Will in the third layer", Nebulis gains access to the astral power of flames. Her flames can react with the oxygen present, setting off a chain of explosions and turning her surroundings into an inferno.
- Earth Astral Power: By contacting the "Will in the second layer", Nebulis gains access to the astral power of earth. With the power of the earth, she is able to summon a golem with the appearance of a lion and the size of a small mountain.
- Other Astral Powers: She has also shown to be able to manipulate ice and wind.
- Shadowy Haze: A manifestation of Nebulis' astral spirit, which exudes from the Astral Crest on her back, taking the form of jet-black wings.[2]
Astral Arts[]
- So Aves Cal Pile (Come, divine staff): She gathers the shadowy haze into her right hand, giving it the shape of a staff. The staff can then be thrown as an attack, with enough power to destroy space itself and the landscape.
Relationships[]
Nebulis I is her younger twin sister. Eve has shown that she trusts her sister, letting her carry out her duties and command the Sovereignty in her stead when she was unable to.
Crosswell is her and her sister's relative, but she treats him like a brother. Before the discovery of Astral Energy, she let him stay at their house when the young man recently moved to the capital. After awakening, she was able to recognize Crosswell's swords from Iska. During the chaos at the Heavenly Empire, Nebulis confronted Crosswell as well clashed against each other.
