"There are only two types of things in this world: research samples and everything else...You witches are the former, and the Imperials walking about are the latter...In my world, you're valuable."
— Kelvina to Sisbell, Volume 9 Chapter 4
Kelvina Sofita Elmos was a former researcher of the Heavenly Empire who was responsible for turning test subjects into mutant witches. As a mutant witch herself, she takes the name of Katalisk's Angel. She was the lead scientist of Elza's Sarcophagus.
Appearance[]
Kelvina was a woman with red, shriveled hair and empty eyes. Her skin was pale as if she was malnourished, and the dark circles under her eyes were as if she didn't sleep. She wore a washed-out white coat and black pants.
Personality[]
She was a twisted scientist who is filled with intellectual curiosity, which is why she became a researcher in the first place. However, her curiosity led her to experiment on humans, revealing her lack of empathy, remorse and morality. She also had no qualms experimenting with children and even the weaker Astral Mages such as Sisbell.
History[]
Kelvina was once a promising researcher under the wing of Sir Karosos Newton, but because of her disregard for human life and ethics, she was arrested and imprisoned for crimes against the Empire as well Newton broke all of his relationship with Kelvina. However, she was secretly released by the Eight Great Apostles, who acknowledged her talent for their nefarious plans and supported her experiments behind the scenes.
Together, they established Elza's Sarcophagus, a facility to research astral energy and the Great Planetary Calamity for her experiments. She has connections to the Hydra Family when aiding them to experiment the weaker Astral Mages. Her first test subjects were Subject F and Vichyssoise Alek Hydra. She also created artificial astral spirits, the Beasts of Katalisk.
Two years ago, Kelvina was overjoyed by the arrival of Elletear Lou Nebulis IX, a purebred descendant of Nebulis, who willingly traveled there to become a test subject. However, she could not foresee that Elletear's compatibility with the Great Planetary Calamity would be too high. When the princess went out of control, Kelvina was ready to give the order to dispose of her, but Elletear escaped before that could happen.
Synopsis[]
Volume 9[]
After waking up restrained on a bed, Kelvina welcomes Sisbell and tells her that they were in the Empire. She starts touching Sisbell and remarks that she takes after her sister, as her Astral Crest's energy was remarkedly weak. Kelvina explains that this place was the "Birthplace of Witches", where not only Vichyssoise underwent the operation to become a true witch, but her sister Elletear as well. Sisbell accuses her of lying, but Kelvina continues rambling. Despite being a fine specimen, Elletear lacked the level of obedience Kelvina desired, and that's why she needed an alternative, preferably from the same family – Sisbell herself.
Kelvina binds Sisbell to a wheelchair in order to show her something, but she is forced to run when Unit 907 and Rin infiltrate Elza's Sarcophagus to rescue the princess. They free Sisbell and eventually find a water tank labeled "Subject E". Kelvina appears and explains it belonged to Elletear, but Sisbell adamantly refuses to believe her words. Jhin grazes her cheek with a bullet to shut her up, but Kelvina continues talking and informs them of the Great Planetary Calamity. He tells her that they will arrest her and destroy the facility, but Kelvina takes out a remote control instead and presses the button. The furnaces of astral energy start bursting open, releasing the Beasts of Katalisk.
Rin tries to take her out, but Kelvina orders one of the spirits to self-destruct, allowing her to escape. They eventually corner Kelvina, but she reveals that she just was buying time and begins transforming into a witch. Rin attacks her from behind, but her daggers shatter on impact. Kelvina retaliates by firing a beam of astral energy, which vaporizes Rin's golem when it pushes her out of the way. The resulting explosion knocks Rin down and Kelvina attempts to fire again, but Iska stops it by cutting it as it was charging, paralyzing his right arm.
Rin charges with her fist and Kelvina underestimates her, as Rin was powerless without any soil to control. However, she staggers from the punch because Rin covered her fist with the hidden soil from bottles inside her outfit. It was effective because of the astral energy permeating the soil, so Rin shapes them into daggers. She tries to cut Kelvina with them, but she mysteriously disappears and reappears on top of Rin. She attempts to crush Rin with her wings, but Rin's earth daggers quickly reassemble into a shield to stop it. Rin then transforms it into a whip to restrain Kelvina's wings, preventing her from moving so Iska could attack. Kelvina uses her violet flames, but Iska just cuts them down.
It seemed to be his victory, but Kelvina turns her body into particles of light to escape and then teleports on top of him. She would've beheaded Iska had he not reacted quickly. Astral energy could bind Kelvina, but that small amount of soil didn't have enough to hold her. She then teleports behind Rin and throws her against the wall. Upon figuring out her teleportation time, Iska charges toward Kelvina, so she raises to the ceiling to avoid him. However, that was her greatest mistake, as Rin had a golem stationed on the surface prior to entering the facility. It broke through the ceiling to capture Kelvina, allowing Iska to cut off her wings and causing her to crash inside a furnace.
Kelvina crawls out, but it is too late. Her body was exposed to a large amount of astral energy, it was rejecting it like poison. She praises Iska for the fight but laments that he dropped her inside the furnace. The boy says it was a coincidence, but Kelvina replies that she hates that word since it's unscientific. She much rather use the "will of the planet". Before crumbling away, she tells someone named Nazariel that she wasn't able to reach the planet's core and accepts her fate, peacefully dying.
Abilities[]
High Intellect: Kelvina was a scientist specializing in astral energy. Through her research and trials, she was able to turn people into monstrous "witches" different from Astral Mages. Among her test subjects were Elletear and Vichyssoise, both of whom were born with remarkably weak before their experimentation.
Mutant Physiology: Kelvina underwent the operation to fuse with a fraction of the Great Planetary Calamity and gained the ability to transform into a mutant witch. However, due to being born as a regular human being, it took 6 minutes and 29 seconds for Kelvina to fully transform into a witch.
- Superhuman Durability: As Katalisk's Angel, she was as strong as the Planetary Stronghold, and even a tank shot wouldn't be able to break her.[1] Rin's daggers shattered upon hitting her wings.
- Astral Energy Body: She is able to turn her body into tiny particles of light and then reform again.[1]
- Astral Energy Beam: Her wings begin glowing and the lights converge at one point before releasing a blast of astral energy. It was powerful enough to evaporate everything it touched.
Astral Arts[]
Astral Flames: Like Vichyssoise, Kelvina obtained the ability to generate purple-colored astral flames. These flames were hot as the sun and could not be extinguished through regular means.
- Violet Asteroid Belt: The violet flames swirl into a large fireball to engulf the opponent. The fireball could also split into smaller pieces to rain down on her target.
Leap: Kelvina's signature move was teleportation, but beyond what was possible for regular astral mages. As if violating the laws of physics, it left no traces or indication of where she would appear next. But despite its strengths, it had the weakness of a 9-second waiting period between jumps.[1]
Relationships[]
Karosos was once Kelvina's superior, who saw potential in her. However, their relationship ended after it was found out that she lacked principles and had experimented on people of turning them into "witches". Newton considered Kelvina as a disappointment and remembering her name only disgust him.
The Apostles were interested in Kelvina and her research. After she was locked up for illegal human experimentation, the Apostles secretly released Kelvina to continue her experiments, in order to further their nefarious plans.
The first princess of the Nebulis Sovereignty, and one of Kelvina's test subjects. She was captivated by Elletear's body, and even her fingers trembled, waiting to lay her hands on the princess upon seeing her for the first time (like a child upon getting a new toy). However, Elletear was a terrible specimen, as she didn't have the level of obedience Kelvina desired. Kelvina attempted to get rid of Elletear, but she got away.
Vichyssoise was one of Kelvina's test subjects, and the one labeled as "Subject Vi".
After being brought to Elza's Sarcophagus by the Hydra Family, Kelvina attempted to use Sisbell as a test subject for her experiments just like she did to Sisbell's eldest sister, Elletear. She touched Sisbell and sense that she has a remarkably weak Astral Power. Because she was disappointed with Elletear and her instability, Kelvina desired Sisbell as a substitute research subject, one from the same bloodline as Elletear in order to replace the eldest princess as well expecting Sisbell has the levels to obey Kelvina's commands. Sisbell called Kelvina as a liar when she refused to believed she experimented her sister, Elletear. However, her plot was foiled when Sisbell was rescued by the 907th unit and Rin as well Kelvina dies.

Trivia[]
- To put her teleportation in perspective, Iska's senses could detect Lord Mask when he teleported behind him. With Kelvina, it was impossible to tell at all. There were no indicators such as wind or sound.
